FAQ

What Issues Can a Frenectomy Fix?

A frenectomy can address various challenges that young children and toddlers may face, such as breastfeeding difficulties. It helps infants position their mouth and tongue properly while breastfeeding, making feeding easier and more comfortable.

Feeding problems: Children who undergo frenectomies often experience better function and are able to eat more efficiently.

Breathing/airway concerns: When the tongue is restricted, it may adopt a lower position, affecting the development of the palate and mandible. This can lead to a smaller airway, which is more likely to collapse during sleep.

Speech difficulties: Releasing the tongue and lips helps make speech clearer and more natural.

Frenectomy Procedure Aftercare

In most situations, we advise parents to perform stretching exercises for a period of three weeks to help ensure the area heals properly. We’ll provide clear guidance on how to carry out these stretches. You will need to come in for two follow-up appointments: one at one week and another at three weeks after the procedure. Additionally, Dr. Andrea Kapsou will be available for a WhatsApp call to check on the healing process and discuss the stretching routine a few days after the procedure.

We generally expect about half of the healing to take place during the first week. By the time of the three-week follow-up, the area should be about 90% healed.
